Tips for Newbie Solopreneurs
Ready for Solopreneurship? Here are 3 Simple Lessons a Multi-passionate Teacher Followed in her Transition
When I was in my 6th year of teaching, I was stuck, doing everything:
• Teaching, Being Co-ASB Advisor, & Department Head
• Coaching Science Olympiad and Track and Field at the same time
• Having a busy social life
18 years later, I’m still busy balancing all my passions and wanting to do it all. Here’s what being a multilingual, multi-passionate teacher has taught me about being a solopreneur.
Lesson #1: Being mentally ready for all the tasks.
Throughout my teaching career, I’ve had so much going on and balanced it all. It’s been constant go, go, go.
Now as a generation X teacher transitioning from a school classroom to running an online, business, I’m prepared to do it all.
The only difference is as a teacher I worked for someone else, and now I get to do things that I want and outsource those I don’t want to do.
Lesson #2: Repetition leading to improvement
If I taught a subject and had it only once a day, I was frustrated. Why? I didn’t get a chance to repeat the lesson on the same day to improve delivery. When I had repeat classes, each class would improve throughout the day.
There are tasks like writing weekly emails to my list and writing content that are hard. Yet, I know doing them repetitively helps me improve.
As a solopreneur, I get to play around with what I want to write. I’m struggling with too many ideas, but what I learned in the classroom is pushing me daily.
Lesson #3: Saying NO.
I have lots of passions, but I also recognize I had a problem saying no. During one school year, I was triple-booked after school coaching Science Olympiad from 2:50–3:25, then I’d sprint to the track to coach from 3:30–4:30 and then back to the classroom to teach Spanish for Educators from 4:45–6:00.
Now, I’m learning to say NO to things that could lead to burnout and stop me from growing my business.
I still have a lot to learn, but my experience and my willingness to learn will push me along in my new pursuit.
